I spend a lot of time thinking about 1BandID's purpose. To me, it’s the idea of being attached.

Think about the things you can’t live without every day. You would say that you are attached to them, wouldn’t you? Chances are, if you are reading this you know exactly what I’m talking about. You’re attached to something. Many things. Not necessarily material things (I’m open to arguments about bikes here, ha!). You may not have thought about it that way. But, if you’re a driven person? A caring parent or friend? An athlete? An entrepreneur? Think about the things that you absolutely cannot be without? The people closest to you. Running. Your bike (like I said, this attachment is real). Competing. Making yourself better. Crossing the finish line. Getting to the starting line. Hitting a PR. Achieving those goals you once thought were impossible.

These things become a part of us and we really become a part of them. They become so important that we become attached to them. So much to the point where we can’t imagine being without them. Could you imagine being without your family, friends, or training buddies. No way! You are attached to them. Could you imagine being without running? Without training in general? That driven mindset? Probably not! You’re attached to them.

It gets to the point where we don’t even know these things are there. We may not always recognize it. We don’t take them for granted. But they become a habit. They live in our subconscious. They become something that if we don’t get to experience it on a given day day, then that day feels a little empty.

You don’t have to think about it. You don’t have to constant remind yourself about it. It’s a part of you. You’re a part of it. It’s a feeling really. It’s part of your DNA. You just do it. You just can’t live without it.

My family and friends and being there for them are most important. Seeing what my body can do while I’m competing, creating, running, riding, racing, throwing weight around. Those things are at the top of my list.

Then there’s this attachment I have to helping and motivating athletes, kids, busy parents with a lot on our minds, and people with allergies or medical conditions. As I build 1BandID that list seems to grow. You’re all expanding that list for me. Thank you!

I’ve become attached to helping people through 1BandID. It’s become a part of me. I’m head to toe, 100% attached to doing my part with 1BandID to help keep all of you a little safer and motivated while you’re doing what you love. What you’re attached to.

That’s why the notion of simply attaching 1BandID to something everybody wears just about every day makes so much sense to me. You don’t have to think about it being there. You don’t have to worry about whether not it’s going to be there. It’s going to be there because it’s attached to what you wear every day when you do what you love.

Now when I say I want 1BandID to be attached to your watch, GPS, or fitness tracker, that’s a simple physical thing. What I really mean, is that I want it to be attached to your adventures, to your training, to your races. Every day. Every step. Every lap. So that it can give be there to give you some peace of mind, some confidence, some insurance that if something does happens, you’ll have the right information with you so that first responders can help you notify the people closest to you.

Do what you love. Chase it. Stay attached to it. Do everything in your power to get better.

Go on. I’ll make it simple to have the right information and motivation on the journey. I promise to deliver a product that comfortably and securely attaches to any watch/GPS/heart rate monitor/fitness tracker. That adds some safety, peace of mind, and the most important information at a first responder's fingertips. That gives a splash of color and your words of encouragement

Most Epic Endurance and Fitness Weekend Ever July 31 2015

It’s taken close to a week to recover and digest it all, but I believe we that last weekend we experienced what might be the most epic endurance and fitness sports weekends in the history of all mankind. Let’s flash back on this Friday, shall we...

Le Tour

It doesn’t get much better than Le Tour. The greatest endurance event in the world. This year, perhaps more any any race in the recent past, was filled with heartbreak and drama. It was crushing to watch some major riders forced to abandon, even with the podium in reach. In the end, Froome takes that special yellow-jersey ride down the Champs-Elysees for the second time in three years.

Would you like your Tour to be more exciting and magical? Ok. You could climb Alpe d’Huiz twice in one day like they did in 2013. Or you can put Alpe d’Huez as the final challenge before the race hits Paris. It’s only happened twice since they started featuring it regularly in 1976.

Talk about making a host country proud. What could be better than Thibaut Pinot taking the French’s winning streak to three on The Tour’s most famous and mythical stage.

Alas the tour is over, and the majority of the world that would rather see the world perched on two wheels and two pedals are sad. I mourn with you.

The Iron Cowboy

This one is going to warrant a post of it’s own some day very soon, especially since I was fortunate enough to bring my two boys out to participate in the Massachusetts 5k. In what was arguably the most intense feat of personal human endurance, James Lawrence, aka the Iron Cowboy, finished his epic 50 Ironman distance races in 50 days in 50 states. Those of us lucky enough meet and witness his passion and determination knew that his completing this epic challenge was a foregone conclusion. I’m sincerely in awe of this man. The guy is all heart, and legs, and lungs. But mostly heart. Again, more to come on this one.

The Crossfit Games

I probably get more excited about The Games because I’m very fortunate to belong to a CF gym (Crossfit New England) that consistently sends athletes and teams to compete. Getting to watch coaches, athletes, and friends you train with on a daily basis and learn from get after it on the biggest stage makes this event so much more special. I fell in love with CF from the first time it kicked my ass - almost three years ago. For me, it’s become the foundation for enabling me to not only achieve a level of fitness I’ve never had, but a foundation for competing in other sports I love like triathlon, running, cycling, swimming, and trying desperately to keep up with my two young boys.

Probably the coolest part is the Masters competition. Confession, yes, I’m a Master, but nothing like these bad asses. Men and women ages 40 to 70+ challenged themselves and inspired us more mature (at least in years on the planet) folk as to what our bodies are capable of for many many years to come. I have to say, it was also amazing to see Katrin win and Mat finish second again - two athletes that are always training at our gym, not to mention Team CFNE finish in the top 20, and two of our masters finish in the top 10 in their respective age groups. 

Ironman Lake Placid

I like to call this one Ironman New England since it’s our closest option for an Ironman race and lots of local friends and athletes make the trek out there. I was especially excited to track one of 1BandID’s first customers and biggest supporters, Capt. Caldwell Clarke. The guy is a machine. PR’s his swim and run. All of this after crushing the World Police and Fire Games a few weeks ago. I can’t wait to be his race sherpa in Kona one day.

The Biggest Loser Marathon

One more. This one might have been under lots of people’s radar screens. But another friend and big 1BandID supporter, Dani (aka @IrishEyes1982) ran the Biggest Loser Marathon. And despite suffering a bite from a dog just two days before, she still managed to knock out 4th female overall and tops in her age group. Big congrats to Dani!



Whew. Writing this was an endurance event in itself. Thankfully we live in a technology-enhanced world. The Tour on TV. The Games on the iPad. The Iron Cowboy on Social Media. Lake Placid athlete updates via text. Oh yeah. Endurance spectating multi-screening at its finest.

Bring on the new weekend. Saturday and Sunday are always welcome here. I’m sure we’ll get along splendidly. However, from an endurance fan perspective, good luck competing with the epic one we just experienced.

Keep Moving Forward. Stay in #SharkMode | 1BandID May 21 2015

I find sharks are insanely fascinating. Apparently, everyone else does these days. Sharks have their own show: Shark Tank. Their own movies: the good, Jaws and the awesomely bad, Sharkado 1, 2, and 3. Their whole week: Shark Week. The list goes on. Like the world-famous face of Hansell, Sharks are so hot right now! 

One of the most important shark facts is that they have to keep moving forward to stay alive. Think about that. Think about how important it is to keep moving forward. For a shark it literally means life or death.

And, I can’t think of better advice for a new or veteran, old or young runner, triathlete, cyclist, crossfitter, or any athlete. Hell, anyone for that matter. Go #SharkMode. Keep going forward.

For you and me, it might not mean the difference between living or dying. But it might make the difference of our dream or goal living or dying. Whatever that dream is…to start a couch to 5k plan, run a marathon, or finish an Ironman. It's a mentality that you have to adopt and it can be the difference between being a better swimmer, a faster runner, or getting stronger in order to make that final push to the finish line.

For sharks, it’s about life or death. It should almost feel that same way for us. That we need to keep learning, keep improving, keep persevering. To keep moving forward to stay alive. To feel alive. Go backward and it’s over. 

Let’s never lose sight of our goals. Like a shark uses all of its sense to locate food, let’s focus everything on achieving them. We have to be able to taste the success. Like blood in the water. We have to be able to taste our next training session. Our next PR. Our next sale. Our next success. No matter how small it may be. 

It can start as a feeling. With the right motivation, it becomes an instinct. A habit. Make that forward movement be your oxygen. Think hard about it every day. Let’s remind ourselves why it’s important. Whether we’re doing it for ourselves or to motivate and inspire others. Let's get with our coaches for one-one-one training sessions to identify weaknesses. Let's finally dial in the right nutrition. Let's do an extra track workout, a new drill in the pool. Always learning, always moving forward is critical to our journey.

And don’t pay attention to the lampreys (aka haters), hanging on and trying to suck the life out of you. Let's keep moving forward. It doesn’t have to be at top speed. We can move slow. Evaluating. Learning. Progressing. Even the proper sleep and recovery is movement in the right direction.

Age? Age doesn’t matter. No excuses! No matter how old you are. Don’t let yourself get stuck. Don’t let yourself stop. And never under any circumstances go backwards. There are so many opportunities. There are so many tools. There’s access to information. There’s access to experts that have done it before. You just have to keep moving forward while you can, because you never know.

There’s a confidence that comes with being a shark too. Not too many living things get in a shark’s way, especially at feeding time. That mentality brings confidence. And with confidence comes freedom. The shark doesn’t care who or what is in its way. The shark knows that it can’t go backward. It’s not an option. And it shouldn’t be an option for us on the road to achieving our dreams or goals.

So, put your body in beast mode when you have to, but always keep moving forward. Always keep your mind in shark mode. Who’s with me?
